The Great Curve: 2002 Annual

Dear Cousins,

Few people will say they miss the experience collectively known as 2001, and this is leading to some high hopes for the future. I am with you. But in the past couple of weeks, are you not starting to notice just how much you really achieved in the past four seasons, despite the wild adversities, unplanned-for changes and intense shakedowns?

From an astrological perspective, 2002 is a very different year than was 2001 (lacking a Mars retrograde, minus Mars-Pluto and Mars-Chiron conjunctions, sans an eclipse dead-on the Summer Solstice, minus several people you once knew, and so forth). But what remains (thanks to Saturn opposite Pluto for one last round) is the same necessity to confront our old beliefs and ideas with the realities that can finally free us from them. Belief is a force of awesome power, because it can completely obstruct reality from our view. But so too is visioning. All of what we see, touch and feel begins with a plan on some level, and usually we get to choose between visions and beliefs. In other words, our plan can be based on the past, or on the present reality of our minds.

But the past has definitely taken a beating. One way or another, each of us has had our World Trade Center knocked down, and each of us has some rubble to clean up. While we're thinking of rebuilding, we might well ask what it will take to get us to build something truly different in its place.

Great to be with you,

e.f.

The date and time of the Sun's ingress to the new sign changes a little each year, so check with an astrologer if you want the exact positition of your Sun. The reason for this is that our calendar is still not accurate, or rather, natural.

Aries (March 20-April 21)
Mars in Pisces is likely to be stirring up some of your deepest fears and most imaginative hopes. Pick and choose consciously and some unusual opportunities can manifest, but consciously is the key. If you can get yourself to a high enough place, you will notice that there's quite a view, and much of what recently seemed impossible is now actually within reach. When to grasp is a question of timing, but I assure you, time is on your side.

Taurus (April 21-May 20)
Maintaining a structured belief system is important to your well-being, but maintenance involves change. If it's usually difficult for you to sustain a new vision of what is possible for long enough to make it happen, your current situation is providing you an opportunity to see both further and wider, and deeper into yourself. Commitments are a visioning process, and the ones you make now you're more likely to keep because you really understand their value.

Gemini (May 20-June 21)
If you find your mind drifting off to far away places, I suggest you take the trip. One particular issue that you've been trying to work out, something in the 'who you really are' category, has been especially resistant to logic and reason, and at the moment you're getting a break from both of those things. If you can let yourself drift on the mental airwaves, and listen to the spacy sounds, a major discovery awaits you.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)
Last week's eclipse of the moon in your sign may still have you feeling a little raw, and rather poignantly aware of your emotional needs. I can't promise you that anyone in particular will be able to fulfill them, but I can promise you that you have options for where to get those needs met. Just don't be too defensive about what you're feeling. You do have your needs, and you're entitled to them. Knowing that is more than enough.

Leo (July 22-Aug. 22)
Recent events have allowed you to let go of something or someone, and I gather that it was pretty long-unresolved material. It's funny how sometimes we don't know what emotions are behind what actions, and what fears lurk behind those emotions. And sometimes even in seeing or knowing, it's not always possible to make the necessary connections, or take the necessary steps to actually let go. You've just come a lot further than you think.

Virgo (Aug. 22-Sep. 22)
You've reached a point in your life where you must do the impossible, or so it seems, and I speak of a particular healing goal that you set for yourself long ago. Healing would seem impossible in this world, where so few understand the concept, or care to, and where so many strive to inflict pain. But this is truly personal territory, where the priorities of others must come after your own need to make peace with yourself, and with what has been done to you.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23)
There could not be more stirring up your emotions, or hardly so. But as events unfold, it's clear enough that you'll benefit from being provoked and, more to the point, taken outside your comfort zone. It's really the last place you want to be, because within that zone, there is really very little comfort. If you can stay with the discomfort, you will cut through the haze and contradiction of a presumption that could not be further from the truth, and you'll feel a lot better for it.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22)
Stick with the way you're doing things, even though you may feel like it's time to change your methods. You've persisted with one particular project for quite a while, and it's about to get a major infusion of energy. Your mind often has a hard time keeping up with your creative priorities, but a mind is just a mind. What you are onto now is bigger than thought, and it's bigger than words.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22)
You are reaping the rewards of a long-sustained effort at making something right, and I'm talking about years, and potentially great rewards. But the cost you had not counted, and which you may now be paying, is reassessing what it is you hold true and dear. This is never easy. But I urge you to look at what you think you have give up, and determine carefully whether it's actually a loss. Part of what made this issue drag on for so long has been believing that it was.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20)
These are not stable times for you, but stability is wildly overrated. The kinds of questions you're likely to be asking right now have far-reaching implications. You're always free to ignore what you learn, but what you're becoming aware of is pretty compelling stuff, and compelling information has a way of changing us, and real change can be scary. But there is, fortunately, no formula your new view of yourself, which is precisely the point.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19)
Recent developments, or perhaps ideas, are likely to be lending clarity to a thought process that has long seemed difficult to put into words, and putting it into words would be very helpful now. In fact, the harder it is to translate to language, the more you need to do it. Opportunities like this don't come often, and what you get on paper today will mean a lot even in two or three weeks.

Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)
The journey of Mars through your sign has not exactly been sentimental, but it's been rather sedimental, stirring up the muck that lives at the bottom of your emotional pools. It was time to drain those things, anyway, but now at least you can see the need for keeping up with your maintenance. You are someone who needs to pay particularly close attention to the emotional realm, both within you and without. There is hardly a difference, so vigilance counts for all the more.
